 Single Camera Techniques 

 

In this essay I will discuss the benefits and advantages of single camera techniques; I will also further explain the ins and outs of the reasoning behind single camera techniques. A single camera technique is the use of one shooting camera; this is done to further pull the audience in and make them feel one with the film or show. Another technique I will discuss within this essay is multi-camera techniques, which is when the coverage of a high paced action production requires the use of multiple cameras to capture everything at once from alternative angles, to create the best result. 

With the camera there are certain ways in which it is shot and used such as, for single camera techniques there is only one camera used for the recording process of a scene. This is to create a sense of realism and make the audience feel apart of the film or show through the natural style of shooting. Most directors tend to enjoy and benefit from single camera shooting as they have more control of the production as they are able to set the camera up for separate individual shots. The filming process for this technique is quite expensive because it has to be shot over and over again to replicate the scene in different angles to ensure that the best angle is found and can later be used; also, the director may shoot the scene and choose the angle but later change his mind so this repetition of shooting multiple times provides safety and reassurance for the production. 

A single camera technique has a certain way of being lit for instance, the lighting is much easier to control as each shot can be lit on its own. Whereas with multiple cameras shooting the lighting must be sufficient across the whole production. The lighting process for single camera techniques is far easier as one can add styles and tones to individual scenes as each shot has the maximum attention on it. The only issue with lighting a single camera production is that each time the angle changes the lighting must be replicated in the scene which is costly of time and money. As the lighting is tailored to each shot it can take time to match height, complexion and build of the scene each time. Certain equipment is used for this type of production like, key lights, black lights, reflectors and fill lights which are all lights placed strategically by the crew members. Often ambient lighting can be used for the shot such as sunlight, lamps, streetlights and more; all these examples of lighting will surround one camera and will have to be replicated. Low key lighting is a technique used to emphasize shadows which is achieved with hard sources of direct lighting in specific areas. High key lighting is now mainly used to present an upbeat mood or tone, usually used in sitcoms which are a single camera production.  

  

Framing can be a major factor to the success of single camera techniques, for example certain framing must be used for specific shots, a master shot is a long and uninterrupted shot of an entire scene. The main reason for a master shot is to provide context and relationships between scenes and characters.

There are many advantages and disadvantages to the use of sound in the single camera process. Firstly, one benefit is that single camera techniques can use a second camera to enhance the sound they capture and then they can further develop the sound with foley sounds in editing. Often the sound recorded can be used over multiple takes and cuts, which can provide more of a consistent outcome. However, the negative side does impact the process for example they require a certain amount of overlay, therefore the recording must start slightly early to avoid jumpy transitions.  Continuity can be a major issue, and this is one of the main reasons that not everyone on the project will agree with using a single camera. 

 

The single camera technique has its own particular way of being edited because usually the scenes are all recorded together in a specific location or when all the cast are available or needed. In every production the editing process can be very time consuming and along with the time consumed to film the single camera production, which can be quite lengthy, the process as a whole can be rather time consuming. In this process you can’t switch between cameras so all the editing must be done after the recording of the scene.  

Certain genres and themes slide perfectly into the single camera technique of filming, here is a great example of a genre that benefits from single camera techniques. Horror, this genre alone is an amazing example of a genre which benefits highly from single camera. Because of the realism that the technique provides it makes the film or show seem all the more real; and allows the audience to feel apart of it only further extending the fear as it races through their bodies. The jump-scares are a nice example as if the audience feels directly involved in the scene the greater effect things like a jump-scare will have. Other than horrors comedies tend to use single camera as it pulls u into the story helps u relate to the characters and allows u to have a laugh as you get to know each and every character.
