 What are the responsibilities of the producer? 

The producer is the soul and heart of the project, from creativity to management they will be heavily involved. Often, the producer will be the first; if not one of the first involved with the project. They will visualize the creation and the commercial aspects and continue to drive their force within the creation for the project, all the way through to distribution. Overall, producers are mainly seen as the primary decision makers, from casting to creative plots. For a producer there are few crucial skills which are necessary. For instance, leadership is vital, as they will need to control the project, to get the whole crew on board and have the maximum chemistry for the maximum success, a producer must show great management skills and be the voice of the project. Producers may be in charge, but they also must be able to accept advice and criticism from members of the crew, as they may be the expert in the particular field, such as photographers may know the specific needs for specific shots more so than the producer. This leads to another two valid skills I have in mind, trust and compromising, without these the project may not ruin a smooth course; if there is tension amongst the crew it may cause conflict, therefore leading to a less productive team.

Todorov was a very influential individual, from Bulgaria; He indulged in History, Literacy, Sociology and being an essayist. He is the main culprit behind the traditional narrative theory. If not for Todorov, narratives wouldn’t have their structure in which they still follow to this day, Todorov discovered that narratives have a repeated chronological process, where actions take place in a specific order one after the other. Todorov mentioned in his theory that there always is three stages that a character will go through, these being equilibrium, where everything in the narrative is balanced. Then progress, when something or someone comes along to disrupt that equilibrium. And finally, they reach a resolution when equilibrium is restored.

Screen writers are faced with a lot of challenges, especially during their beginning of their career. For instance, some skills that are essential are time management; as deadlines must be met consistently and in a professional manner. Also, as a writer you must be able to work under pressure as there is a lot to account for, such as ideas, characters, ideas, plot and more. All this to account for in such a short period of time can be very energy consuming, therefore one must be able to cope with the long work. For writers it can be rather hard to get to a successful position, it can take many years to get your work noticed. There are many ways to get into the industry, but it remains hard to get into, some ways include getting experience in theatre work, handing in original plays to production companies and using an agent to get noticed. All of these are viable options, however they all can take time to allow access to your career; its more of a steppingstone to further success. To be taken serious, writers must provide a bulk of original work, almost like a portfolio for companies to ensure you are fit for the job. There are many great case studies and examples of successful screen writers. Such as, The Shane Black effect. This story has become very renowned in Hollywood, At the age of 23, two years after graduating from UCLA with a theatre degree, and eager for a source of income while waiting for his acting break, Shane Black decided to try screenwriting. He penned a buddy cop flick, featuring a deranged lead seeking redemption. He gave it the type of clipped, masculine title popular in the mid-80s blockbuster era: Lethal Weapon. The script was scooped up mega-producer Joel Silver for a quarter million dollars, catapulting Black into screenwriting stardom. Within a decade, after earning a then record $4 million for The Long Kiss Goodbye, he became the highest paid writer in the industry.  Also, there is The Rise Of Thomas, Thomas didn’t sit in isolation with a Syd Field book and a blank computer screen, refusing to give up until he penned the next Lethal Weapon. For lack of a better word, his path was much more ragged. He got his foot in the door editing an online humour magazine while working on a quixotic pilot for a cable network toying with the idea of original programming. After a while he shifted to a job as an assistant to a development executive. This led to a job as a writer’s assistant on a television drama and then a stint as the right-hand man to a writer with a studio deal on the Fox lot. Somewhere in this mix, at the urging of a producer he met, he worked on an independent film screenplay based loosely on his childhood, and eventually landed a spot on the writing staff for the new drama helmed by the Fox-backed writer he had assisted. The show was promptly cancelled.  Throughout all this activity, he had a spec script, written for a popular television comedy, that he had been continuously polishing — integrating the lessons from his other experiences as he learned them. It was this spec script that, two years ago, landed him an interview with an influential producer working on an interesting TV pilot.  Thomas was asked to pen the pilot episode, which was later picked up as a full-time series — making Thomas a head writer.  It pulled good enough ratings to recently earn a second season.

 Roles and responsibilities of a director. 

 

What does a director do? Well, the director is the one who leads and ensures that the production follows its path in the creative aspect. Directors can be seen as the creative lead in the production process, they begin this process from the beginning, to the postproduction edits. Typically, it is the executive producer who hires the desired directors for the production. Directors work with the screenwriter closely, and sometimes they can be the screenwriter themselves as well; they may also work with a screen writing team, depending on the production. The main responsibility for the director is to visualise the script; also, they work close with the producers in the hiring decisions. Once the cash is funded for the production, they work together in choosing head of departments, such as, director of photography, assistant director, production designer and many more. Also included in the hiring process, is the casting; in which they develop the script further, tweak or change minor or major things depending on scenario and camera shots. Before filming, they choreograph where they want the actors to be positioned, this is to get organised beforehand. Confidence is a key skill for directors, as it will help them in being decisive. They must be able to communicate well as there is a lot of compromising and tweaking or script and shooting, this leads to them needing good judgment as they ill need to be quick but effective when the suddenly decide to alter something.  The ways a director can pursue their career is by studying at university and achieving a bachelor’s degree and or above; also, you can become a screenwriter and develop your skills further as time goes on and get noticed by producers. Lastly, you can simply audition, it may be difficult due to the competition, but it is the simplest way to get noticed.

1. Give two examples of events that cause later events in the film, but which occur before the film ‘starts’. 

 

• The plane crashing into the local river, leading to mass virus spread. 

• The first citizen gets sick, then he turns up to the baseball game and scares the public. 

• US Government creates virus to wipe out hostile civilization, they then decide to destroy the bioweapon, but the plane crashes before reaching its destination. 

2) List two events from the 92-minute film that happen in different time and space to the one we are shown. 

 

• Judy’s pregnancy 

• Civilians shot dead, regardless of sickness 

 

3. Identify key plot points in the film that you would associate with the three-act structure (Act 1 = set-up/normality, Act-2 = Confrontation/disruption, Act 3 = Resolution/restoration of normality) 

Act-1: 

Introduction to all the crucial characters in abundance, then the clueless build up to seeing the first sick local at the baseball game. 

 

 

 

 

 

Act-2:  

Everything begins to seem very off in the town and danger is way too prominent in this small and quiet town. The breakdown of the town quickly begins, leading to the evacuation process, where we see our two main characters, who are partners, they are separated. This is our dilemma in the story. 

 

 

Act-3: 

David our main protagonists is faced with the decision, stay in the safe sector of quarantine, or rescue his beloved wife from the imminent danger she is facing. He leaves the safety of his position and returns to save his wife. They leave on to the quest to safety, it’s a long road ahead as they meet numerous near calls, but the get out of town in time for when the atomic bomb hits. Eventually they reach the next larger town, which without them knowing is in imminent danger as well.
