The Commissioning Process

Commissioning bodies

Ways a script can go into production

-     - A production company may reach out to a screen writer to produce a script for a film or episode idea they have. This is typically based on their status and or referrals from previous work.

-     - Film competitions is a great way to get your script into production as it can provide that you gain some notice

-     - A screenwriter no matter how experienced or exposed can pitch a script to an independent company, however if the one is exposed in the industry beforehand then it’s likely that they will be given the time of day, more so than those who are beginning.

-     - It can also come down to who you know, if you do have friends in the industry it is a lot easier to be referred or receive vital advice. You can also get advice online from websites such as screen skills, who support aspiring screenwriters, but do not fund them unfortunately.

What is optioning?

Roles And Responsibilities Of A Screen Writer

Screen writers are faced with a lot of challenges, especially during their beginning of their career. For instance, some skills that are essential are time management; as deadlines must be met consistently and in a professional manner. Also, as a writer you must be able to work under pressure as there is a lot to account for, such as ideas, characters, ideas, plot and more. All this to account for in such a short period of time can be very energy consuming, therefore one must be able to cope with the long work. For writers it can be rather hard to get to a successful position, it can take many years to get your work noticed. There are many ways to get into the industry, but it remains hard to get into, some ways include getting experience in theatre work, handing in original plays to production companies and using an agent to get noticed. All of these are viable options, however they all can take time to allow access to your career; its more of a steppingstone to further success. To be taken serious, writers must provide a bulk of original work, almost like a portfolio for companies to ensure you are fit for the job.

Roles And Responsibilities Of A Producer

The producer is the soul and heart of the project, from creativity to management they will be heavily involved. Often, the producer will be the first; if not one of the first involved with the project. They will visualize the creation and the commercial aspects and continue to drive their force within the creation for the project, all the way through to distribution. Overall, producers are mainly seen as the primary decision makers, from casting to creative plots. For a producer there are few crucial skills which are necessary. For instance, leadership is vital, as they will need to control the project, to get the whole crew on board and have the maximum chemistry for the maximum success, a producer must show great management skills and be the voice of the project. Producers may be in charge, but they also must be able to accept advice and criticism from members of the crew, as they may be the expert in the particular field, such as photographers may know the specific needs for specific shots more so than the producer. This leads to another two valid skills I have in mind, trust and compromising, without these the project may not ruin a smooth course; if there is tension amongst the crew it may cause conflict, therefore leading to a less productive team.

Roles And Responsibilities Of Director

What does a director do? Well, the director is the one who leads and ensures that the production follows its path in the creative aspect. Directors can be seen as the creative lead in the production process, they begin this process from the beginning, to the postproduction edits. Typically, it is the executive producer who hires the desired directors for the production. Directors work with the screenwriter closely, and sometimes they can be the screenwriter themselves as well; they may also work with a screen writing team, depending on the production. The main responsibility for the director is to visualize the script; also, they work close with the producers in the hiring decisions. Once the cash is funded for the production, they work together in choosing head of departments, such as, director of photography, assistant director, production designer and many more. Also included in the hiring process, is the casting; in which they develop the script further, tweak or change minor or major things depending on scenario and camera shots. Before filming, they choreograph where they want the actors to be positioned, this is to get organized beforehand. Confidence is a key skill for directors, as it will help them in being decisive. They must be able to communicate well as there is a lot of compromising and tweaking or script and shooting, this leads to them needing good judgment as they ill need to be quick but effective when the suddenly decide to alter something.  The ways a director can pursue their career is by studying at university and achieving a bachelor’s degree and or above; also, you can become a screenwriter and develop your skills further as time goes on and get noticed by producers. Lastly, you can simply audition, it may be difficult due to the competition, but it is the simplest way to get noticed.

Agent Representation

One thing to consider when commissioning is the agents, these people can really speed up the process, with their numerous connections its very helpful to have one beside you. They can facilitate meetings, opportunities and jobs.

Royalty Payments

Do screenwriters get royalties? No, royalties are given to owners of intellectual properties. Since screenwriters don't publish screenplays they get residuals. With that said they do receive 0.65% of the revenue of a purchase.

Professional Presentation

A screenwriter must consider tow things about presentation both themselves and their portraited work. When it comes to themselves, they must take into account their presentation of their pitching and their attitude. For their work they must ensure their ethic is asserted and confidence in their work is evident to convince the hiring associates.

Time Management

To succeed with commissioning, a screen writer must consistently meet deadlines; the reasoning is to present themselves in a professional manner. with time management comes pressure management, you may have multiple projects to work on at once, so you must be able allocate yourself the necessary time to meet deadlines.

Copyright & Plagiarism

Plagiarism - The act of taking, using or stealing someone's original work, and then passing it on as your own.

Plagiarism can be avoided by declaring where you got your information from.

Copyright Act UK - The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, also known as the CDPA, is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that received Royal Assent on 15 November 1988.

Bias - Inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair.

Screenwriters should have a fair outlook on work, but also being bias may help to  promote their work as it gives attention to their produce, something which is hard to gain in this industry.

Libel & Defamation  -  The act of oral or written communication about a specific statement based on false information, causing unjust harm to someone's or somethings reputation.

It is important for a screenwriter to be aware of this because it can not only hurt another, but also cause backlash amongst themselves. If the information passed on is declared to be false and determined to be passed on with bad intent, then it can really damage ones reputation, potentially permanently.

Watersheds, Censorship & Certification.

Target audience is an important thing for a screenwriter to consider because without it, they may fail to gain notoriety, or have a lack of interest from the public or hiring companies. Failing to present a purpose behind a script can become a fatal mistake, leading to the script having a lack luster approach.
